NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

The pill, sorted at your pharmacy.

Whether you’re starting contraception for the first time or you’ve been on the same pill for years, your pharmacist can assess you and supply it — no GP appointment needed. It’s part of the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, so it’s completely free.

You want to start the pill

You’ve run out of your usual pill

You’d like to switch to a different pill

Your GP prescription has lapsed

You want ongoing supply, no GP visit

Free consultation · Pharmacist-led · Same day

How it works

One free chat. Fully covered by the NHS.

No referral and no GP wait. You’ll have a free, private chat with a pharmacist who checks the pill is right for you, then supplies it the same day where suitable. Everything is covered by the NHS.

NHS service

Your contraceptive pill, free on the NHS

Includes your consultation and your pill supplied on the day where suitable — with no charge and no hidden extras. The service covers most combined and progestogen-only pills, whether you’re starting or continuing.

Which pills can I get?

The service covers most combined and progestogen-only (mini) pills. Your pharmacist will talk through the options and recommend one that suits your health, medicines and preferences.

Do I need an appointment or referral?

No GP referral is needed. You can book online or drop in, and same-day appointments are usually available. The consultation is free on the NHS.

Can I start the pill for the first time here?

Yes. The pharmacist can assess you, check your blood pressure and weight where needed, and start you on a suitable pill — you don’t need to have used contraception before.

Can I get my usual repeat supply?

Yes. If you already take the pill, the pharmacist can review it and provide an ongoing NHS supply, so you don’t have to wait for a GP appointment.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Not always. Suitability depends on your health, any medicines you take and your blood pressure. A Pharmacist Independent Prescriber will assess this with you and refer you to your GP or a sexual health clinic if another method is more appropriate.
