Microsuction questions
Quick answers, so you can book with confidence.
Common questions about earwax microsuction at Bristol Independent Clinic. Anything else, call 0117 974 1348.
Will it hurt?
No — microsuction is usually painless. Most people feel only a light sensation and hear the suction during the procedure. There's no water and no pressure flushed into the ear, so it's comfortable even for sensitive ears. If anything feels uncomfortable, just say and the Pharmacist Independent Prescriber will pause.
Is microsuction safer than syringing?
Yes. Microsuction uses gentle suction under direct vision through a microscope or loupes, so the Pharmacist Independent Prescriber can see exactly what they're doing. Unlike syringing or irrigation, there's no water flushed into the ear canal — making it suitable for patients with perforated eardrums, grommets, or a history of ear infections.
Do I need to use drops first?
No — that's the advantage of microsuction over syringing. You can come straight in. That said, for very hard or compacted wax, using olive oil drops for 2–3 days beforehand can make removal quicker and more comfortable.
How long does an appointment take?
Most appointments take 20–30 minutes. That includes a brief otoscope check, the microsuction itself, and a quick chat about aftercare and what caused the build-up.
What if there's no wax to remove?
No charge. Every appointment starts with an otoscope examination. If the Pharmacist Independent Prescriber sees no significant wax build-up, you don't pay — you leave with reassurance and any next-step advice if the cause may be something else.
